This course will be focused on encouraging young artists to use creativity and self-expression by using a variety of beginner hand building and glazing techniques. Students will learn the fundamentals of hand building such as working with slabs, coil and pinch pots, scoring and slipping, and glazing using both underglazes and cone 6 or 10 glazes to create fun, customizable projects.
Projects include a slab-built bowl decorated with a variety of art tools and also things found around the house such as legos and pasta noodles; coil pots using different designs and scoring and slipping; painting a picture on canvas using traceable designs; and a pinch pot fish.
Supplies such as clay, tools, and glaze will be provided.
Clay projects need to dry thoroughly and be fired in a kiln before we can glaze them. Then they go back into the kiln for the final firing. Finished clay pieces will be available for pickup within two weeks of the last class. Ages 6-8.
Runs on Saturdays, 3:00p-4:30p, TBD
Instructor: Barbara Uber
Cost: $135

This class will focus primarily on working with clay, but will also offer a drawing and painting opportunity. The students will learn three basic ways of hand building with clay, which are pinch pot, coil and slab methods. And, naturally, we want to make it fun!
We will make a watermelon bowl (pinch pot), a basket (coil method) and a trinket box that looks like a slice of pie (slab method).
The drawing will be on a school folder and feature the student's choice of a famous landmark. It will be finished with colored pencils if time permits or left as a pen and ink drawing. For our painting experience, we will paint a dragonfly on a canvas, with acrylic paints.
Our final week will be spent glazing our clay projects. These projects need to dry thoroughly and be fired in a kiln, before we are able to paint them. They will then be glaze fired. This work should be ready for pick up within two weeks of the last class. Ages 9-12.
